Our Schroth Method Treatment Programs empower patients and their parents
The aim of conservative treatment of juvenile and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis as espoused by The International Scientific Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT) is to stop progression before puberty and avoid the need for spinal fusion surgery. The basic objectives set out in SOSORT'S 2016 guidelines are as follows:
- To stop curve progression at puberty (or possibly even reduce it).
- To prevent or treat respiratory dysfunction
- To prevent or treat spinal pain syndromes
- To improve aesthetics via postural correction
As each patient's spinal curvature is unique, Schroth Method physiotherapeutic scoliois-specific exercises (PSSEs) focuses on their muscular and postural asymmetry in order to redress their scoliosis and elongate and stabilize their spine three-dimensionally.
SOSORT's Absolute goal is to avoid spinal fusion surgery.
Timely conservative treatment intervention can enhance heath related quality of life for adolescent indiopathic scoliosis patients. This is possible if patient, parent and therapist treatment goals are in harmony with one another. With the collaboration of all three parties, desirable and sustainable treatment outcomes can be achieved.
In our Schroth Method Patient-Parent Programs the Therapist's role is to empower both the patient and their parents by providing:
- A customized Schroth In-Clinic and Home Exercise Program for their specific idiopathic scoliosis curvature type
- Coaching and education in 3D auto postural correction; stabilising corrected posture; and managing activities in daily living for patient and parent
The patient and their parents, need to commit to:
- A customised Schroth In-Clinic and Home Exercise Therapy Program.
- Lumbar mobilisation
- Thoracic mobilisation

Schroth Method Exercises have been proven to prevent progression
Schroth physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises have been proven to: prevent progression; improve function; decrease Cobb angle; improve vital capacity; and reduce pain and disability in patients diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis.
Schroth exercises when performed in conjunction with bracing has improved bracing outcomes in patients with curvatures greater than 40º, thus avoiding the need for spinal fusion surgery.
