Specialists in Scoliosis Treatment
Malcolm first became aware of the Schroth Method in 2008.
From the outset, it was evident that Schroth Method scoliosis exercise treatment could not only help to improve posture and balance, but importantly, prevent further curvature progression, reduce pain and disability, and enhance quality of life.
Malcolm was certified as an ISST Schroth Therapist. in 2014, authorising him to practice in International Schroth 3-Dimensional Scoliosis Therapy According to Katharina Schroth®.

International Schroth 3-Dimensional Scoliosis Therapy (ISST)
“Three-Dimensional Treatment for Scoliosis – A Physiotherapeutic Method for Deformities of the Spine” by Christa Lehnert-Schroth, PT, became Malcolm’s most valuable scoliosis learning resource. The more he immersed himself in the Schroth Method the more determined he was to visit the Asklepios - Katharina Schroth Klinik in Bad Soberheim, Germany for Schroth Therapist training.
In October 2014, Malcolm together with 2 of his colleagues, Kit Laughlin and Olivia Alnutt, attended an intensive International Schroth ISST Therapist training course at the Bad Sobernheim Klinik.
He returned to the Bad Sobernheim Klinik for further studies in the Schroth Method In May 2016 and October 2018 when he assisted his mentor, Axel Hennes, in the practical training of a new group of ISST Schroth Therapists.
Malcolm, adheres to the Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT) 2016 Guidelines for the conservative treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis during growth.
Origin & Evolution of the ISST Schroth Method
Christa Lenhart-Schroth, Katharina Schroth's daughter, co-developed patient exercises into a more systematic therapy for scoliosis and kyphosis. During the period from 1961 to 1990s the clinic in Bad Sobernheim grew into a specialized scoliosis in-patient rehabilitation centre (Institute).
In 1992, Christa standardized and structured ISST Certification Therapist training courses, which were officially opened to physiotherapists worldwide. The courses held at the Katharina Schroth Klinic in Bad Sobernheim were conducted in English. Her seminal book (published 1973, revised 2007) was used as the core text for ISST Therapist training. Christa's systematic and diligent aproach, ensured that visting physiotherapists, after completing their ISST training in Bad Sobernheim, could confidently reproduce Schroth exercises consistently and accurately on return to their own out-patient clinics.
In 2008, Axel Hennes, a senior physiotherapist at the Katharina Schroth Klinic, was appointed International Schroth Instructor and assumed responsibility for the ISST Certified Therapist Training Program. Axel, together with his colleague, Udo Roevenich, introduced a new, less esoteric Schroth Curvature Classification system: a combination of the original Schroth Body Blocks concept with the radiological curve location, direction of lateral deviation and rotation. The new system has simplified the patient scoliosis assessment process for ISST Schroth in-patient and out-patients clinics globally.
On leaving the Askleopios-Katharina Schroth Klinic in 2015, the same year Christa passed away, Axel established the ISST Training Institute in Bad Sobernheim. As a senior instructor and now its President, Axel has contributed significantly to the dissemination and adoption of the Schroth Method globally, including in the United States. More recently he has conducted ISST training courses in Switzerland, Serbia and South Korea,
Today, the ISST training faculty’s on-going collaboration with orthopaedic specialists, orthotists and researchers is ensuring the ISST Therapist Certified Training Pogram continues to evolve with the integration of the latest developments in scoliosis management and research findings on scoliosis and brace concepts.
