History of the Schroth method

Katharina Schroth was the Pioneer of Conservative
Scoliosis Treatment

From a very humble beginning, the Schroth Method was founded by Kathrina Schroth in Meissen Germany in 1921. Katharina relocated to Bad Sobernheim In 1961 and together with her daughter established the Katharina Schroth Clinic, a specialised in-patient scoliosis rehabilitation centre.

As the Katharina Schroth Clinic rapidly expanded with increased patient intakes, so did the acclaim of the Schroth Method throughout Germany and Europe.

Today, the Schroth Method is acknowledged and widely practiced internationally as a leading evidenced based conservative three-dimensional treatment for idiopathic and degenerative scoliosis.

Original Katharina Schroth Klinic

Schroth Klinic Established 1961

Beginning from a top floor apartment, over 3 decades, mother and daughter continued to acquire adjacent blocks of land to establish a sprawling scoliosis institute to accommodate in-patients attending their intensive scoliosis rehabilitation programs.

Establishing themselves as world leaders in scoliosis treatment, Katharina Schroth was honoured by the German Governement in 1969 with the Federal Cross of Merit. Meanwhile, her daughter Krista, a physiotherapist, continued to structure, refine and advance the Schroth Method.

In 1973 Krista launched her world renowned seminal text "Three-Dimensional Treatment for Scoliosis – A Physiotherapeutic Method for Deformities of the Spine."

Dr Hans Weiss - Grandson of Katharina Schroth

Whilst ownership of the Schroth Method changed in 1995, between then and 2008, development of the Schroth Method continued under the direction of the Klinic's medical director Dr Hans Rudolph Weiss, Katharina Schroth's grandson.

Opened 1997

In 1995, Asklepios Kliniken Group, a German health care provider, bought the rights to the Schroth Method and the original Klinic which was re-branded the Asklepios Katharina-Schroth Klinic. To accommodate the growing demand for scoliosis treatment and to modernise the infrastructure, Asklepios built a new clinic which officially opened in Bad Sobernheim in 1997. The new clinic expanded capacity and ehanced delivery of the Schroth Method's intensive rehabilitation programs.

Supported by a team of Medical Specialists, Therapists and Orthotists, patients attending the clinic live in-house during their 3 week intensive scoliosis rehabilitation program. As many as 160 patients attend the clinic at the one time. Daily therapy sessions are run on a group basis, 12 -14 patients supervised by 4 therapists.
